LATER NEVER COMES

Eric Pleska & Ed Massena
2004-05 punk rock music project.

ABOUT

Longtime pals Eric Pleska and Ed Massena have shared a musical bond since the early 1980s, evolving through various creative incarnations over the decades.

Their collaborative spirit first took formal shape in the mid-to-late 1990s when they formed the pop-punk band 43 Bob, capturing the raw energy of the era's burgeoning punk scene while still in high school. As the millennium turned, their sound matured and intensified with the hardcore project Bed Of Nailz in the early 2000s, showcasing their growing musical versatility and commitment to authentic expression.

The duo's creative partnership reached a defining moment during a series of weekend sessions throughout 2004 and 2005. In the intimate setting of Ed's upstate New York lakeside home studio, Pleska and Massena embarked on an organic songwriting journey that yielded approximately two dozen original compositions.

These intensive creative retreats produced what would become Later Never Comes—a punk rock project that represents not just their musical maturation, but the culmination of a decades-long creative partnership forged through years of artistic exploration and genuine camaraderie.

"EVERYBODY WANTS SOMETHING"

A Nostalgic Tribute with a Personal Connection

The iconic "Everybody Wants Something" stands as perhaps the most memorable fictional song in Canadian television history. Originally performed by The Zit Remedy—the amateur band formed by beloved characters Joey Jeremiah, Snake, and Wheels—the track became a cultural touchstone after its appearance in a landmark 1989 episode of "Degrassi High." Despite its intentionally simplistic lyrics and chord progression, the song captured the earnest DIY spirit of teenage musical ambition that resonated with a generation of viewers, including a young Eric Pleska, who after seeing The Zits' music video decided he wanted to start a band too.

A Meaningful Connection
The Later Never Comes cover of this cult classic carries a unique backstory that bridges fiction and reality. Pat Mastroianni, the actor who immortalized the charismatic Joey Jeremiah throughout the Degrassi franchise, developed an unexpected connection with the band through an interview with Eric's underground publication, TAPOUT fanzine.

In a remarkable full-circle moment, Mastroianni later shared the band's rendition of "Everybody Wants Something" with his fellow cast members on the set of "Degrassi: The Next Generation." This behind-the-scenes endorsement not only validated Later Never Comes' musical approach but created a meaningful link between the fictional world that inspired their cover and the real-world artists paying homage to a piece of Canadian pop culture history.

Eric Pleska with Degrassi High stars "Snake" & "Joey Jeremiah" in Toronto.
